POLL: Should Britain intervene in the Israel and Gaza conflict?

After meeting with leaders in Israel, Saudi Arabia and Egypt this week, Rishi Sunak has said they had agreed “we need to do everything possible” to stop the spread of the war, but for some this is not enough.

Writing on X (formally Twitter) today the Prime Minister said: “Britain stands together to reject terror, hate and prejudice – at home and abroad. We will strain every sinew to support a return to peace and stability in the Middle East.”

However, Mr Sunak has been criticised for not doing more for the Israel-Gaza conflict.

TV presenter Steve Miller replied to the PM saying: “Words come easy. Action doesn’t”.

X user @4849Demir said: “Why don’t you do something to solve this risk?”

The Prime Minister said his two-day visit to the region showed “that the UK stands in solidarity with them against terrorism” and “there can be no justification” for the devastation Hamas has caused.

He added: “I wanted to sit down with other leaders and talk face to face. Because in times of tension and division, it’s more important than ever to accelerate diplomatic efforts.”

Writing in The Guardian, Owen Jones dubbed Mr Sunak’s words as “a useless gesture” and called on both the Prime Minister and Sir Keir Starmer to condemn attacks from both sides, not just those carried out by Hamas.

Israel has been blocking cross-border supplies from entering Gaza, with Israeli warplanes and artillery laying siege to the territory. Just 24 hours were given for civilians to exit northern Gaza, which was widely seen as an impossible task.

Some 100,000 people took to the streets in London this weekend, with one protester using images of the Prime Minister, US President Joe Biden, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with the message: “Wanted For War crimes”.

Downing Street said they “condemned Hamas’s terrorism and stressed that Hamas do not represent the Palestinian people.

“The Prime Minister underscored his commitment to opening up humanitarian access to Gaza to alleviate the suffering of thousands of people who desperately need food, water and medicine.”

However for some this is not enough. So what do you think? Should Britain intervene in the Israel and Gaza conflict? Vote in our poll and have your say in the comments.
